The Power of Believing

Claude M. Bristol was a newspaper reporter. He studied the religions of the world and watched them operate. In hospitals, Claude some people die while others who were just as sick get well. He watched football teams win while other teams who had just as good material lost. He studied the lives of the greatest men and women in all areas of life. As a result of years of study, he wrote a book called “The Magic of Believing.” Let me quote him.

“Gradually I discovered that there is a golden thread that runs through all teachings and makes them work for those who sincerely accept and apply them, and that thread can be named in a single word, belief! It is the same element or factor, belief, which causes people to be cured and enables others to climb high the ladder of success.”

But long before Bristol came to that conclusion, William James, the great American psychologist said, “Our belief at the beginning of a doubtful undertaking is the one thing that assumes the successful outcome of our venture.”

Long before William James, Jesus Christ said this. “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes,” Mark 9:23.

A young man couldn’t get up the courage to ask his girlfriend of many years to marry him when another man showed an interest in her; he got desperate. He requested his pharmacist friend to give him a courage pill; he did and said it would take 15 minutes to kick in. That night he took the pill went to her house, and in 15 minutes he grabbed her hand and said: “Come on, we’re getting married.”

Later he asked the pharmacist, “That was the most powerful pill I’ve ever had, what was in it?” He replied, “Three things, a gelatin capsule, some sugar, and the belief that it would work.”
